THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SECURITY BARRIER

How UK businesses match the right physical security product to every opening, every risk and every way of trading.

What are Security Barriers, and What Does Trellidor UK Offer?

Physical security barriers are structural products fitted to a building's openings to physically prevent unauthorised entry. They do the one thing electronic systems can't: physically stop an attack at the point of intrusion.

A single "best" product doesn't exist. The right product is matched to the specific opening, risk and business context.

Trellidor UK manufactures six categories, each covered below.

TRELLIDOR UK PRODUCT CATEGORIES

RETRACTABLE SECURITY GRILLES

Flagship T950i and T700i. Shopfronts, doors and windows.

TRELLIDOR COMMERCIAL RETRACTABLE

TRELLIDOR ROLLERSTYLE

Larger-format lockdown for service doors, warehouse bays, forecourts and shopfronts.

TRELLIDOR LOUVRE SHUTTERS

Aesthetic-led shutters for hotels, offices, boutique retail.

ACCESS GUARD

Mobile expandable barriers with no fixed install. Kiosks, pop-ups, zoning.

TRELLIDOR SECURITY GRILLES

Fixed access-control gates for entrances and internal zoning.

Every product is manufactured to fit the specific opening and installed by our own nationwide teams.

Why Choosing the Right Barrier Matters

Choosing the wrong physical security product is expensive in three ways.

WASTED SPEND

An under-specified barrier that fails costs the outlay plus the incident. An over-specified barrier costs unnecessary capital and daily operating friction.

INADEQUATE COVER

UK insurers now specify LPS1175 certification as a condition of cover. A non-compliant barrier can invalidate a claim or trigger higher premiums.

OPERATIONAL FRICTION

A shutter blocking a fire route, a fixed gate where mobile was needed: daily costs that compound over the product's lifetime.

Getting the choice right delivers barriers matched to the specific risk, insurer-compliant certification, and aesthetic and operational fit.

Where are Commercial Security Barriers Used?

Trellidor UK barriers are installed across every UK commercial sector. The specification varies; the principle doesn't: match the barrier to the specific opening and risk.

RETAIL

Shops, convenience, supermarkets, forecourts, kiosks, shopping centres, pharmacies, jewellers, off-licences.

Typical: retractable grilles on shopfronts, plus Security Gates on cash offices.

HOSPITALITY

Hotels, boutique accommodation, pubs, bars, restaurants.

Typical: Louvre Shutters (aesthetic-led), plus Security Gates on cellars.

HEALTHCARE

Pharmacies, GP practices, dental, care homes, hospital estates.

Typical: LPS1175 SR2+ grilles on dispensaries, plus Security Gates on internal zoning.

EDUCATION

Schools, colleges, universities, private schools.

Typical: grilles on IT, science and DT rooms, plus Rollerstyle on service entrances.

WAREHOUSING AND LOGISTICS

Distribution, e-commerce fulfilment, 3PL.

Typical: Rollerstyle on loading bays, plus commercial grilles on personnel access.

OFFICES AND MIXED-USE

Corporate, professional services, serviced offices.

Typical: Louvre Shutters or discreet grilles at reception, plus Security Gates on IT rooms.

A survey identifies which openings carry which risk, and the specification is built from the opening backwards.

Who Makes the Commercial Security Decision?

Commercial physical security is specified by five UK audiences.

BUSINESS OWNERS
AND MDs

For SMEs, the decision sits with the owner. Trigger: incident, insurance renewal, new premises.

Priority: certified protection that doesn't disrupt trading.

FACILITIES MANAGERS

Multi-site operators, hospitality, education, healthcare.

Priority: consistency across sites, compliance with head-office standards, minimum installation disruption.

SECURITY AND RISK MANAGERS

Larger organisations with dedicated security functions.

Priority: risk-based specification integrated with the wider security stack.

INSURANCE BROKERS

Regularly require LPS1175 barriers after a claim or for higher-value premises.

Priority: insurer-recognised certification and consistent quality.

ARCHITECTS AND SPECIFIERS

New-build and refurbishment.

Priority: aesthetic and structural integration, compliance with specified standards.

Trellidor UK works with all five, tailoring responses to each: insurer specs for brokers, project docs for specifiers, standardised rollout for FMs, plain-language recommendations for owners.

The Value of the Right Specification

A well-specified barrier delivers value across six dimensions, amortised across the decades-long life of the asset.

INSURANCE AND PREMIUM IMPACT

LPS1175-certified barriers meet the requirements of most UK commercial insurers, either as a condition of cover or a trigger for premium reduction.

BUSINESS CONTINUITY

A break-in costs far more than the stolen goods: damage, replacement stock, excess, lost trading, reputational impact. Certified barriers prevent the full cost cycle.

STAFF AND CUSTOMER SAFETY

Over 2,000 incidents of violence per day against retail workers alone (BRC 2025). Barriers reduce exposure during vulnerable hours.

ASSET AND LICENCE PROTECTION

For pharmacies, off-licences, jewellers, electronics retailers, barriers protect the licence, not just the goods.

AESTHETIC AND OPERATIONAL FIT

The right format integrates into how the business operates. A wrong-format barrier costs daily friction and customer-facing embarrassment.

LONG PRODUCT LIFE

Trellidor barriers are manufactured for decades, with maintenance limited to lubrication and inspection.

When to Specify Physical Security

Five moments trigger most UK commercial physical security decisions.

NEW-BUILD AND FIT-OUT

Specify at design stage alongside electrics, HVAC and fire. Faster and cheaper than retrofitting, and often a requirement for cover to commence.

AFTER AN INCIDENT

Repeat targeting is the defining feature of UK organised commercial crime. Certified barriers immediately after a first incident are typically the single most effective preventative measure.

AT INSURANCE RENEWAL

Where the insurer specifies LPS1175, installation is planned around the renewal date. Brokers usually flag this in advance.

FACILITIES UPGRADE OR REFURBISHMENT

Signage refit, extension, mezzanine build-out: natural moments to upgrade. Combining works reduces disruption and total cost.

CHANGING RISK PROFILE

New stock, extended hours, new site, growth in cash handling, change of adjacent tenant, plus external shifts: rising crime, ORC patterns, changed insurer requirements.

For each trigger, Trellidor UK offers a free site survey with no obligation.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BARRIER

How to Choose the Right Barrier: a Five-Step Framework

Choosing the right physical security product is a decision, not a purchase. Five steps take a business owner or facilities manager from "we need better security" to a specification that matches the premises.

1

UNDERSTAND YOUR RISK

Characterise what you're protecting (stock, staff, cash, data, controlled substances), where you're located, your operating hours and the threats you face. A rural warehouse holding high-value inventory has a different risk profile from a city-centre office. The risk profile determines the certification level.

2

MAP YOUR OPENINGS

Physical security is opening-by-opening, not building-by-building. Identify every point of possible unauthorised entry: shopfronts, doors, windows, service points, internal zoning, external perimeters. Each opening needs its own specification: the shopfront may need SR2, the back door SR3, the stockroom SR1.

3

MATCH THE CERTIFICATION

LPS1175 is the UK's standard for intruder-resistant building components, tested by the LPCB. Ratings run from SR1 through SR8, by the tools and time required:

RATING

ATTACK AND TOOLS

TIME

SR1

Bodily force and stealth tools

1 min

SR2

Opportunist attack and hand tools

3 mins

SR3

Determined attack and wider tools

5 mins

SR4

Experienced attack and heavier tools

10 mins

Most UK commercial premises specify SR1 or SR2.

4

CHOOSE THE FORMAT

Five formats cover most applications:

Retractable Grilles

Shopfronts, windows, doors where visibility matters

Trellidor Rollerstyle

Larger openings where solid lockdown is preferred

Trellidor Security Grilles

Permanent access control internally

Access Guard

Where openings change or no fixed install

Trellidor Louvre Shutters

Where aesthetic excludes visible steel

More than one usually applies: retractable on the front, Rollerstyle on the back, Security Gates internally.

5

GET THE SPEC RIGHT

Tell your surveyor everything: opening dimensions and substrate, insurance requirements (bring the policy schedule), operational constraints (fire routes, delivery hours, aesthetics), regulatory constraints (CQC, controlled drugs, planning, listed status). The more the surveyor knows, the better the specification.

PART B: HONEST ALTERNATIVES

Trellidor does not sell these, but they belong in any honest comparison.

VEHICLE BARRIERS AND BOLLARDS

For premises facing vehicle-based attack (ram raid on jewellers, ATMs, corner sites), certified crash-rated bollards (IWA 14, PAS 68) are essential, alongside opening protection.

SECURITY FILM FOR GLAZING

Inexpensive first-layer measure. Not equivalent to a certified barrier, but for lower-risk premises where visible security is unacceptable, film plus alarm can be proportionate.

REINFORCED AND LAMINATED GLAZING

For heritage, listed, or high-end premises. Substantially more expensive per opening, but wholly invisible.

ELECTRONIC ACCESS CONTROL

Complementary, not substitute. An unlocked door with a reader is still an unlocked door. Specify both.

ALARMS, CCTV AND MONITORED RESPONSE

Complementary. Electronic detects; physical prevents.

When Trellidor Isn't the Right Answer

For heritage premises where visible security compromises the fabric, security glazing usually beats a grille. For vehicle ram raid, certified bollards matter more than another retractable. For lower-risk premises with a tight budget, film, alarm and basic locks may be proportionate.

The right specification often involves Trellidor products; sometimes alongside non-Trellidor; occasionally not at all. A responsible survey tells you which case applies.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Start with the risk, not the product. Characterise what you’re protecting; map every opening; match each to an LPS1175 certification level; choose the format; then get the specification right at survey. The five-step framework in this guide covers each step.

LPS1175 is the UK’s standard for intruder-resistant building components, tested by the LPCB. Products are rated SR1 (bodily force and stealth tools; 1 min) through SR8 (power tools; 20+ min). Most UK commercial premises specify SR1 or SR2.

Grilles (usually retractable) preserve visibility: you see through when closed. Shutters (usually roller) provide solid lockdown with no visibility. Grilles are used where display must remain visible; shutters where lockdown is preferred.

Yes. They solve different problems. Alarms and CCTV detect and record; physical barriers prevent. A determined attacker inside your premises with the alarm ringing is still stealing your stock.

Many UK commercial insurers specify LPS1175 certification as a condition of cover, particularly after a claim or for higher-value stock. Check your policy or speak to your broker.

Yes. Most Trellidor UK products can be retrofitted without structural work, subject to a survey confirming substrate suitability. Installation is typically completed within a single visit per opening.

Cost depends on opening size, LPS1175 rating, format and installation complexity. Survey-based quotations are the reliable answer, but expect hundreds to low thousands per opening for standard specs, higher for SR3+ or larger openings.
